Why Now Might Be the Best Time to Become a TEFL Teacher

Ask almost anyone who places TEFL teachers abroad for a living, and you’ll hear some version of the same thing: right now is an unusually good moment to make the leap. Not because the industry is booming in the way it once did — growth has actually cooled slightly in recent years — but because of a supply problem. Fewer people are choosing to teach abroad, schools are competing harder for the ones who do, and the balance of power between teacher and employer has shifted more than it has in years.

A shrinking pool of teachers, and a widening gap in demand

Rowan Lomas, job placement manager at Oxford Seminars, has spent almost 16 years matching graduates with schools abroad, and the picture from where she sits is consistent every year. “When we ask our contacts every year, how many openings do you have, they’ll tell us — depending on the school, maybe two or three, or dozens, or hundreds even. Some of the recruiters have thousands of openings a year, but we don’t have enough teachers to fill those openings,” she said. “We cannot meet the hiring needs of the vast majority of our contacts. There are always jobs available for people who are qualified for those positions.”

That imbalance shows up in outcomes rather than just headcounts. Contracts that used to run a full year have shortened to as little as five months in many placements, according to Radu Olanson, Oxford Seminars’ founder and CEO — a shift he attributes directly to schools competing harder for a smaller pool of applicants. Pay and conditions have followed the same trend upward. “The conditions for TEFL teachers have improved dramatically,”

Ian O’Sullivan, owner of TEFL Institute and Premier TEFL, said in a separate conversation. “In the past you used to get TEFL teachers who’d say the pay is low, the accommodation’s not good, and now I never see that on forums.”

Why the pool is shrinking

O’Sullivan traces the slowdown less to falling demand for English teaching and more to competition for would-be teachers’ time and attention — specifically, the rise of paid social media work. “I think there’s a lot of that,” he said. “You’ve got TikTokers, you’ve got bloggers, and they all get paid huge amounts of money doing social media. I’ve even seen cases where people are actually doing two jobs — they’re employed full-time with two companies and they go on TikTok and advise how to get away with it.” The knock-on effect, he argues, is exactly the imbalance Lomas describes: fewer people entering the TEFL pipeline, and schools left competing over those who do, pushing wages and negotiating leverage toward teachers. “Those teachers that are left, or decide to go down the TEFL route, can demand higher salaries,” O’Sullivan said. “Demand is stronger than it ever was.”

The comparison that keeps coming up: the job market back home

What comes through most clearly in conversations with people who place teachers abroad, though, isn’t really about TEFL at all — it’s about how the alternative, staying home, has changed. Lomas puts it plainly: “It’s probably a lot easier to get a job teaching English abroad than it is to get a job in your own field, in your home country these days. That’s the impression I’m getting from people. People who are in jobs don’t want to leave them, because they’re afraid they won’t get a new job. Whereas there’s all these schools abroad looking for English teachers.” Her overall read on 16 years in job placement: “It’s never been very difficult, apart from early pandemic, due to travel restrictions. As long as people are flexible, eager, and applying where they actually qualify for the work visa, they should find a teaching job fairly easily these days.”

Olanson offered a specific example that stuck with him. At one of the company’s biweekly information sessions, a woman from the United States told the group she’d been laid off from her job while on vacation — and had come to the session actively looking for a career change. “As she was finding a lot of this information that we’re discussing right now, she got so excited, because this was going to be a great opportunity for her,” Olanson said. “It’s not just people not finding jobs in their field. People being laid off from jobs in their field, it’s really, really — it is what it is these days.” It’s a story he says isn’t unusual. A growing number of the company’s applicants, he added, are university graduates “stepping into basically a jobless market” at home, looking at TEFL not as a gap-year detour but as a genuinely viable career start.

Lomas has watched the same shift show up in who’s actually enrolling. “When I started, most of our graduates were straight out of college, university, 20-somethings into their 30s, maybe,” she said. “Nowadays our average age has really gone up into the 40s, and a lot of our grads are middle-aged career changers, or retirees, 60s, 70s, people looking to go somewhere warmer in the South instead of the Canadian or northern U.S. winters.” That’s a meaningfully different applicant pool than the one TEFL providers were serving a decade ago — less “travel before settling down,” more “this is a legitimate alternative to what’s on offer at home.”

A structural advantage for some providers, too

The tightening market isn’t only reshaping who applies — it’s reshaping which providers can actually place people, and where. O’Sullivan argues that Brexit gave his Ireland-based companies a lasting edge specifically in Europe, now the region he sees as the strongest current opportunity for teachers. “Since Brexit, we’re the largest online TEFL company still based inside the EU,” he said, pointing to the visa and work-permit friction that now slows down UK-based competitors trying to place teachers into EU countries. For teachers themselves, that translates into more of the market actually being reachable — fewer bureaucratic obstacles standing between an offer and a placement in a moment when demand for teachers is already running ahead of supply.

The case for teaching TEFL now

None of this means TEFL has become an easy or risk-free career path — wages still vary hugely by country, and providers across the industry warn against unaccredited courses and unverified schools. But the practical argument for timing is fairly simple: teacher supply is down, schools are competing harder for the people willing to teach, and for a lot of applicants, the alternative on the table at home increasingly looks like layoffs, saturated graduate job markets, or jobs people are too anxious to leave. As Olanson put it, reflecting on the single comment he hears most often from graduates: “The number one comment that I hear from our grads is, I should have done this 5 years ago, or 10 years ago. And my reply to them is, don’t beat yourself up, you’re at least doing it now. And think of everyone back home who hasn’t had the opportunity and isn’t doing it.”
